Welcome to this interesting blog where we are going to open up about our day as a ghostwriter as you tell you how we begin our day and how we continue the work.
It is actually a very fun process of getting to leave the dream of being a ghostwriter and writing books and articles as well as speeches and online web content for your clients.
While this schedule is not indicative of every ghostwriter in the world but this is an average culmination of what our colleagues do and what a typical day at our agency looks like.
This schedule is sometimes different when we have to do onsite writing for our clients and if we have to do work in collaboration with them if they live in a different time zone to ours.
This usually happens if the client is from a different continent and if we have to match their timings so that we can work with them and present them results in their time.
Apart from that this schedule also changes when we are doing something like an autobiography project which includes a lot of interviews and a lot of coordination with the client and in a situation like that it is difficult or rather impossible to maintain a single kind of schedule that is practical and we have to change things a lot.
And then again if we are doing different kinds of projects that require different timings then we have to change this schedule as well but apart from that this is usually how it goes.
So, let’s look at a typical day at Ghostwriting India.
Day in the Life of a Ghostwriter
8:00 AM – Log In and Starting the Day
The day usually starts at 8:00 a.m. when all of our colleagues arrive at the office and log in their employee IDs.
This might sometimes be delayed if there are traffic issues and other stuff that causes delays.
After we log into the system it is usually one cup of coffee and organising all our files including notes, feedback and other documentation.
Once we have done that we then move on to updating the project timelines which includes looking at project deadlines and all the different task lists and adjusting deadlines.
After doing that we plan for the next day so that we can move on to the process of ghostwriting for the current day.
While this is usually how it goes but things can change because of the nature of the project and if you visit us as a guest then you might find different schedules for different ghostwriters depending on what kind of project they are on.
Sometimes you might not even find some members of our team in the office if they have to do remote work or onsite work.
9:00 AM – Research and Meetings
After adjusting all documentation, it is now time to start the day with the first meeting and this is a meeting between all members and not particular teams.
This is when the CEO comes together with every one of us and we discuss different important topics and we can even bring up new topics of discussion.
This can include everything from company expansion to new tools implementation as well as talking about the feedback of our clients and much more.
After the meeting is done, we usually sit down for our individual research objectives.
This research can be in the form of document research or market research or it can even be something like looking at client interviews and recordings depending on the nature of the project.
Additionally, we also look at reference materials in the form of books and articles as well as other reports of similar projects.
Once we are happy with the research, we compile notes and make outlines and organise ideas so that they can be utilised during the drafting process.
10:30 AM – Writing the Draft
This is the most important time of the day and this is when we start writing the draft and the contents for the objectives of the day.
This is sometimes usually done with the help of noise-cancelling headphones so that we can concentrate in our cubical and this is a time of extreme importance.
That is also the reason why it is strictly enforced on everyone to maintain silence from 10:30 a.m. till at least 2 hours so that the writers can get ahead with the work they are doing.
Of course, we have special rooms where we can still hold meetings with our clients because sometimes client meetings are important while working on the project and this is also a time when collaboration is sometimes important.
That is when we move into the coworking spaces where we can collaborate and work together with our colleagues if the project demands it.
This writing process can stretch till the entire time of the day or it can even stretch still the lunch break and this is because each ghostwriter can have a vastly different schedule.
So, we continue to follow the outlines and balance creativity and clarity with our experience and also maintain and adopt the client’s voice and continue our work till it is time to move on to the client meetings which is an integral part of the day.
12:30 PM – Client Meetings
Now it is time to take on all the client meetings and when it comes to that we usually do it with the help of everyone in our team.
Sometimes the client meetings can also be done individually with the clients and it usually takes place in our private working spaces instead of the cospaces.
Client meetings are usually done online and that is the case 95% of the time.
However, there are these special moments when client meetings can also take place face to face in-person and when that is the case, the client visits us and we usually conduct the meetings anywhere they like which can be near our desk or it can even be in the conference room or even having a coffee in the cafeteria.
Client meetings are also an amazing opportunity to showcase our progress to them and this is a very beautiful part of the day simply because we get to show our progress to them and see their happiness and their satisfaction.
1:30 PM – Lunch Break
After that client meetings are done, we move on to the lunch break and lunch breaks are very special at our agency.
This is a time for everyone to simply relax and come together and enjoy as well as talk about everything which might even include work.
This is also the time to bring up new ideas of having fun together which might be going to the cricket pitch set up on the roof or even planning an event at the office.
The lunch break is usually not very long but it feels even shorter than it actually is because of how much fun we have during this time when everyone simply gets to have fun and just eat together and laugh.
Sometimes we often bring food from the home as well and it becomes even more special if any of our colleagues try out new recipes they have seen on YouTube or some other places and it’s an amazing experience.
Other times we can even plan lunch breaks outside the office at a nearby eatery or restaurant and we get to pick whatever we like and have a good time outside and this is usually done when we are happy with a project.
4:30 PM – Editing and Polishing
After lunch, it is back to work and the latter half of the day is usually reserved for the editing process and this is when the draft is complete and the process of editing begins.
Some of our colleagues would argue that this is the most important step of the entire process of ghostwriting and we simply cannot disagree with it because editing is very crucial to produce a polished product ready for publishing.
During the editing process, we utilise multiple proprietary tools as well as other fine-tuning tools in order to improve sentence structure and improve syntax and other grammatical elements in the drafts.
The editing process is usually done individually and every writer gets to do their editing themselves but sometimes we might even collaborate with other colleagues in the case of a particularly complicated project.
We simply cannot rush this process as it is one of the most important stages of the entire ghostwriting process.
The fun part is that we sometimes even invite the clients to join in on the editing process and we get to have their direct valuable feedback and implement it right before their eyes and just be happy at their satisfaction with our work.
5:30 PM – Client Collaboration
Now it is finally time for the closing client meetings and this is actually when the official client collaboration takes place.
This is usually done with the admins of individual projects present and the clients can be physically present and invited into the office and the clients can also join the collaboration meetings through video calls.
While it is true that the client might be present during other stages of the day whether it is the morning meeting or even the editing process but they are unofficial and done at the request of the clients.
However, this is the officially designated time to simply share our updates with them and also come up with new ideas for the future of the project which is usually the case with a novel or a series whether it is stories or scripts.
There is a reason why we usually do it in the afternoon and it is simply because client meetings are not as intensive as doing the actual writing.
The other reason is simply that clients are usually happy to see the day’s work and apart from that they are also professionals working in their own industries and they also do not have the time during the working hours of the day to interact with us and so the evening or the afternoon is the best time to do it.
7:00 PM – Wrapping Up
Now it is finally time to wrap things up and this is when we close down work for the day.
However, that is not as simple as just shutting down our laptops and going home because there are a few things to organise and a few steps to follow.
The first thing to do is to upload all the day’s work on our secure NAS servers. Additionally, we also check to see if the content has been automatically uploaded and backed up on our cloud servers.
After doing that, we organise the files including all the handwritten notes and drafts as well as all the feedback points and make sure to store them properly. These notes can come in any form or shape and can even voice notes and we make sure to save them as well.
Up next is updating the project timelines for the next day in order to make sure we get to work smoothly.
After we have done that, we usually have one last coffee and wait for our colleagues to do the same so that we can hitch a ride together.
Then it finally is time to sign out of the system and be happy and satisfied with the day’s work.
